How Will Filing Bankruptcy Affect My Children?
This being my first Father’s Day, I’ve been thinking a lot about my daughter. And my clients. Many of my clients struggle with the decision to file bankruptcy. They acknowledge that they owe their debts. They just can’t pay them. Nevertheless, they feel a tremendous amount of guilt filing bankruptcy. They were taught to pay their debts and feel like they are betraying their values and principles.
One of the things that I talk about with my clients who are struggling with this decision is their children. I ask them if their bills are keeping them from providing the life they believe their children deserve. Are their bills keeping them from putting nutritious food on the table and clothes on their children’s backs? Overwhelming debt can can prevent providing even the most essential things to your family. And we haven’t even started talking about a college fund.
Some people think that bankruptcy is irresponsible. Of course, I have a certain perspective, but I believe that bankruptcy is one of the most responsible decisions someone who is struggling with debt can make. Every year, hundreds of businesses file bankruptcy, and no one seems to have a problem with that. Consider for a moment if filing personal bankruptcy shouldn’t just be thought of as a business decision, the same way these businesses consider it.
Filing bankruptcy will allow you to get a new start and to focus on your priorities, like your children.
